About the Role

 

John Holland in partnership with McConnell Dowell (Joint Venture) are delivering the Kidston Pumped Storage Hydro Project in Far North Queensland. This is an innovative project that involves the world-first conversion of a disused gold mine into a pumped storage hydroelectric power generation facility in Far North Queensland, approximately 270km north-west of Townsville.

 

  • The project will see the conversion of two existing mine pits into reservoirs, involving the construction of significant underground infrastructure including a large powerhouse cavern, waterway shafts and tunnels. This will allow water to be transferred between the upper and lower reservoirs to generate power during peak periods and returned to the upper reservoir during off-peak periods.
  • This project received funding from ARENA as part of ARENA’s Advancing Renewables Program and is a gamechanger for the clean energy industry worldwide, representing an entirely new approach to large-scale energy storage.
  • This is a FIFO position and will be on a 2:1 roster.

We are seeking an experienced and safety-focused Permit Officer to support the day-to-day operation of the Permit to Work system during the commissioning and energisation phases of the Kidston Pumped Storage Hydro Project. Reporting to the Permit to Work Manager, you will review and administer permit applications, coordinate permits and isolations, maintain accurate permit records and complete workfront inspections to ensure all permitted activities are safely planned, controlled and delivered in accordance with project procedures.

 

What You Will Do

 

  • Review permit applications and supporting documentation, including work scopes, SWMS, risk assessments, drawings and isolation schedules
  • Prepare, issue, revalidate, suspend, cancel and close permits within your project authorisation
  • Brief Permit Holders on work scopes, permit conditions, access limits, isolations and required controls
  • Maintain accurate permit, isolation, lock box and authorised-person registers and records
  • Complete workfront inspections before permit issue, during permitted activities and at handback
  • Monitor compliance with permit conditions and stop work where conditions are unsafe or outside the authorised scope
  • Support daily permit planning, SIMOPS coordination, commissioning boundaries and energisation activities
  • Participate in PTW audits, inspections, incident reviews, briefings and continuous improvement activities

 

What We Are Looking For

 

  • Experience as a Permit Officer, Permit Controller, Permit Issuer or similar PTW role on a major construction, commissioning, power generation, resources, industrial or infrastructure project
  • Practical knowledge of Permit to Work systems, isolation and LOTO principles, commissioning zones, energisation controls and SIMOPS
  • Experience reviewing SWMS, risk assessments, drawings, work packs, isolation schedules and permit documentation
  • The confidence to complete field inspections and challenge incomplete documentation or inadequate controls
  • Strong administration and document-control skills, with the ability to manage multiple live permits and changing priorities
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively with supervisors, engineers, trades and subcontractors
  • A Construction Industry White Card and current driver licence
  • Relevant trade, technical, operations, safety or construction qualifications are desirable. Electrical, HV switching, authorised isolator and other relevant competencies will be viewed favourably
