About the project

John Holland in partnership with McConnell Dowell (Joint Venture) are delivering the Kidston Pumped Storage Hydro Project in Far North Queensland. This is an innovative project that involves the world-first conversion of a disused gold mine into a pumped storage hydroelectric power generation facility in far-north Queensland (270km NW of Townsville). 

 

The project will see the conversion of two existing mine pits into reservoirs, involving the construction of significant underground infrastructure including a large powerhouse cavern and waterway shafts and tunnels to allow the transfer of water between upper and lower reservoirs to generate power during peak periods and return water back to the upper reservoir during off peak periods. 

Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Ensure contractor commissioning plans are fully aligned with client requirements. 
  • Verify that contractor commissioning Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) and checklists adhere to client standards. 
  • Ensure all contractor-prepared operational documents comply with client specifications. 
  • Gather, review, and distribute feedback on contractor draft commissioning plans. 
  • Approve the final contractor commissioning plan. 
  • Endorse contractor commissioning ITPs and checklists. 
  • Review and provide commentary on O&M manuals, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and User Procedure Guides (UPGs). 
  • Attend and contribute to Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), Functional Design Specifications (FDS), and defect inspections. 
  • Participate in Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOPS), Constructability Hazard Identification and Risk Evaluation (CHAIR), and design reviews as required. 

To be successful in this key role, you must have:

  • Must have an engineering degree 
  • At least 5 years of commissioning experience. 
  • Extensive expertise in the detailed "Planning" of commissioning, proving, and demonstrating wastewater/water treatment facilities, pump stations, and pipelines. 
  • Documented success in the commissioning, demonstration, operator training, and timely handover of projects
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and secure acceptance for comprehensive commissioning reports and supporting documents (e.g., ITPs). 
  • Experience in managing or executing the preparation of operating procedures, maintenance schedules/programs, as well as operation and maintenance manuals.
