Title:  Senior Geotechnical Engineer

Job Number:  23302
Location:

Adelaide, SA, AU, 5000

The Project:

The consortium of John Holland, Bouygues Construction, Arcadis Australia, Jacobs and Ventia has been selected to build South Australia's biggest-ever road infrastructure project. In partnership with the South Australian Government, this consortium forms the Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Alliance.

The Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Alliance, will deliver the final 10.5km section of the North-South Corridor, forming a continuous 78 km, non-stop, traffic light-free motorway, and contributing to a long-lasting legacy for the community and people of Adelaide.

The T2D Project involves constructing two separate tunnels – the Southern Tunnels and the Northern Tunnels connected by an open motorway, with a combined total distance of 10.5km, open to traffic in 2031.  The T2D project comprises the tunnels, surface works including road and bridge construction in addition to services buildings and complex mechanical and electrical infrastructure. The T2D Alliance is committed to providing opportunities for local people, Aboriginal workers, apprentices, trainees and job seekers who are long-term unemployed and offers people an incredible opportunity to be a part of an iconic project.

The Role:

As a Senior Geotechnical Engineer, you will work on dayshift roster and lead and advance technical excellence in geotechnical design and construction support. You will play a key role in managing geotechnical risks and ensuring the seamless integration of complex design solutions across excavation and tunnelling, earth retaining structures, foundation systems and ground improvement.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide day‑to‑day support to the Geotechnical CPS Lead by delivering timely, accurate, and practical geotechnical engineering advice. This includes managing the collection of relevant site data and observations, performing appropriate analyses and interpretations, and applying sound geotechnical and scientific principles - particularly when actual ground conditions differ from the design ground model or underlying design assumptions.

  • Supervise and mentor junior engineers while independently executing geotechnical fieldwork activities, including geotechnical risk management, ground condition assessments, TBM performance monitoring, and ground‑response monitoring and interpretation.

  • Provide informed technical recommendations to support TBM operations through the analysis and integration of collective data, ensuring safe excavation and tunnelling practices, adherence to project management plans, and the consistent promotion of safety, sustainability, and quality across all geotechnical workstreams.
  • Review, interpret, and clearly communicate geotechnical findings and instrumentation/monitoring results, promptly reporting any abnormalities to the Geotechnical CPS Lead. Initiate and manage follow‑up actions in alignment with project plans and procedures to ensure timely resolution and effective risk management.

  • Perform hyperbaric interventions at the TBM cutterhead for TBM front condition assessment, ground stability assessment, and geological inspection.

  • Manage and coordinate geotechnical‑related construction interfaces between designers, construction teams, and on‑site subcontractors. This includes providing geotechnical review and input as required and attending project meetings to support effective communication, resolve technical issues, and ensure alignment with project needs.

About You:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, Mining Engineering, or a related discipline, with membership in a relevant professional institution.

  • Minimum 15 years’ experience as a Geotechnical Engineer or Engineering Geologist, preferably on large-scale infrastructure projects, including proven experience on at least two TBM tunnelling projects with cross passage excavation under mixed-face conditions, particularly relating to ground movement and ground-borne vibration impacts.

  • Strong ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, and willingness to work on an assigned roster, including weekends and public holidays.
