John Holland, as part of a JV with CPB Contractors, has recently been awarded a major works contract for the delivery of Light Rail Stage 2A – City to Commonwealth Park in Canberra ACT over the next 4 years. The project will see three new stops built at Edinburgh Avenue, City South and Commonwealth Avenue, extending the network by 1.7 kilometres.

 

This role will be based in Canberra with travel to Sydney required as needed until the project moves full-time to Canberra in Q3 of 2024.

 

About the Role:

An opportunity is available for an experienced Safety Manager to join our Canberra based project. As Safety Manager, you will implement JHG’s Safety Management System (SMS) on the light rail construction project, develop site specific Rail Safety and Work Health as well as Safety plans and procedures to ensure a safe operating environment for all personnel. You will also provide leadership, advice, and governance of Rail Safety and Work Health and Safety Management systems within the workplace.

Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Develop and administer education and compliance programs for employees, clients, contractors, and visitors
  • Guide and support the Project Leadership Team to develop and implement a safety culture that aligns to the company vision, including adequate development and training in safety-critical roles
  • Ensure the project maintains robust risk management processes, capability, focus, and discipline related to safety
  • Initiate and administer safety, environmental improvement, education and compliance programs for the project
  • Align region and workplace Safety & Workers Compensation strategies with relevant JHG business plans and assist workplaces to implement them
  • Ensure adequate Investigation of all causes of events on-site and recommend actions to prevent future occurrences
  • Coordinate and provide day to day specialist support to internal stakeholders including the Project Leadership team, employees, contractors, clients and visitors during the project lifecycle
  • Develop and guide project safety and environmental professionals to ensure day to day specialist project support
  • Maintain comprehensive safety records, manage statutory reporting requirements and monitor safety and environmental performance progress
  • Provide direction and support to the Project Leadership Team to develop and implement adequate WHS and Rail Safety training within a defined workplace.
  • Provide specialist safety advice and technical input to delivery, ensuring that legal and contractual obligations/risks are identified and communicated appropriately as per both the WHS and Rail Safety Legislation.
  • Conduct and support the submission of Rail Infrastructure Services tenders with WHS and Rail Safety input.

 

To be successful in this key role, you must have:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a Safety Management role on live rail construction sites.
  • Cert IV Transport & Logistics (Rail Infrastructure) – desirable.
  • Working and practical knowledge of both the WHS & Rail Safety Legislation and applicable codes and standards.
  • Safety Lead Auditor Qualification
  • Audit management practices (3+ years)
