About CRN

John Holland manages the prestigious Country Regional Network (CRN) which makes us the first accredited private rail transport operator of a government owned heavy rail network in NSW, and one of only three accredited managers of public rail infrastructure in the State. The scope involves the operation, management and upgrade of country railway lines across NSW including 2,700km of operational freight and passenger lines, and 3,100km of non-operational lines.

About the Role

We are currently looking for a highly experienced Rail Maintenance Supervisor to join our team based in Dubbo NSW. The purpose of this role is to supervise and carry out track maintenance duties to CRN standards. This role will be responsible for contributing to the development of rail maintenance methodologies and management plans.

The successful candidate will be required to attend Maintenance planning meetings as well as carry out maintenance reports to identify risk and necessary controls. The role will also involve coordinating site visits and associated documentation.

The successful candidate must currently reside or be willing to relocate to Dubbo or surrounding areas.

As a Rail Maintenance Supervisor, you will report directly to the Superintendent.


Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Supervise & direct team to delivering programmed maintenance works including sleeper renewal, spotting and rail replacement.
  • Initiate & implement Track Protection activities. 
  • Coordinating the work and performance of multiple teams and subcontractors to achieve outcomes
  • Provide and take leadership responsibility in health, safety and environment management
  • Contribute to development of work methods and rolling short term construction programs and plan daily/weekly production work
  • Build strong internal and external stakeholder management through positive, proactive and professional communication to keep key personnel informed
  • Complete progress reporting, and activities, reports for shift handovers and consistent regular reporting to the Superintendent or Project Manager
  • Ensure compliance of commercial and financial costs including budgets and the implications of directions within your authority limits
  • Read and understand plans, review design documentation, read drawings, and provide constructive review and implementing of final designs, Ensure contractual mechanisms of subcontractors
  • Identify and mitigate risks prior to works commencing, communicate with and engage relevant stakeholders to control risk and contribute to build a risk management culture
  • Select, train and develop Leading Hands and ensure the observance of safety other work standards and fair and reasonable application of industrial agreements
  • Maintain effective consultation with various workers’ representatives and committees on industrial and safety subjects handling issues as they arise and referring major issues to the Project Manager
  • Undertake Track Certification to network requirements.


To be successful in this key role, you must have:

  • Minimum 5 years previous rail supervision experience
  • Hold a current RISI/RICI/RIW ticket
  • Track Certification Qualifications and Experience
  • TVO/TMO Qualification (Hi-Rail) (desirable)
  • HR Truck licence (desirable)
