We are seeking an experienced Construction Manager to join our Queensland Building business unit.

 

The Construction Manager is responsible for the successful delivery of a portfolio of construction projects in accordance with safety, commercial, time, design, quality, sustainability and all other Contract requirements while maintaining client relationships and promoting opportunities for future work. Achieve or exceed project financial targets, identifying and mitigating issues and capitalising on opportunities.

 

Responsibilities of the role include / What you will do;

 

  • Critically review budgets and job plans, making adjustments as required with the bid and project leader
  • Ensure strong contract, commercial and financial risk management, accurate forecasting of both costs and revenue, take corrective action in line with JH’s authority and reporting frameworks and maximise the profit margin for the project. Continue to stretch each project team to meet their “target” gross profit position.
  • Monitor legal, contractual and financial aspects of construction projects
  • Ensure the provision of a safe working environment across all project site.
  • Manage the overall delivery of the project, on or ahead of time with all client expectations met
  • Oversee, monitor and assist with all projects time, cost, design and quality requirements. Implement adjustments and mitigation measures appropriately.
  • Review progress against plans, contractual arrangements and delivery milestones to ensure they are on schedule and within quality and cost estimates and take effective remedial action as required
  • Review regular construction project reports for Qld/NT BU ELT and BU SLT. Be proficient with all details of cost, program, site progress, risks etc to enable timely informed discussions, collaboration and decision-making.
  • Oversee the selection of sub-contractors ensuring they are reputable and meet JHG’s selection criteria
  • Monitor all project activities to ensure they comply with relevant legislation (e.g. Workplace relations, environmental legislation, OH&S)
  • Monitor all project activities to ensure the compliance with JHG management system, policies and procedures
  • Ensure all direct reports are aware of the project’s KPI’s, goals and objectives, and the connection of their role to these goals and objectives
  • Monitor and review the performance of direct reports and provide leadership, mentoring and coaching to the project leadership team (PM, SM, CM, DM and SPE).
  • Drive performance by setting standards, objectives and holding people accountable for meeting them
  • Ensure optimal staff and labour resource allocation across projects to ensure the project has the capability to achieve targets, budget, time, quality and regulatory standards, monitor and guide workflow, setting daily, weekly, and long-term project goals and foster a high performance team within a positive employee relations environment
  • Develop and retain staff with the view to progress staff through the company
  • Demonstrate leadership in health, safety and environmental management
  • Demonstrate leadership in risk management, compliance and auditing, and ensure legislative, pre-contract and commercial obligations are met, including compliance with the relevant Building Code
  • Ensure that stakeholders are actively engaged and that beneficial relationships between the project and the client, subcontractors, community and other external parties are developed and maintained
  • Contribute to new business, continuous improvement and broader business activities
  • Provide input into construction tenders and negotiations
  • Perform all duties in accordance with John Holland policies, processes, systems, reporting and procedures

 

To be successful in this key role, you must have / What we are looking for;

 

Qualifications                           

  • Bachelor of Engineering, Construction Management, Business or equivalent
  • Diploma or Masters of Project Management, Certificate IV Safety

                            

Experience                    ­       

  • 15+ years of experience in project management roles
  • Management of multidisciplinary projects and project teams
  • Contemporary practices in design and construction methodology
  • Contractual, legal, commercial, industrial relations and legislative compliance
  • Advanced financial and commercial management including cost reduction and meeting budgets
  • People and performance management including the performance of subcontractors
  • Complex client relationship and stakeholder management
  • Quantitative and qualitative safety, environment and quality risk assessment
  • Analysis of and reporting on complex project performance, compliance, defects and/or non-conformance

 

Typical              ­           

  • Management of $1bn+ projects
  • Experience as Project Manager and Construction Manager
  • Experience in managing a variety of contracts, e.g. Joint Ventures, Alliances, Design & Construct.
  • Pre-contracts experience in managing or overseeing tenders for a range of projects
