About the role


As the Queensland region begins to ramp up so do the opportunities to join one of Australia’s leading Tier One contractors. We currently have an opportunity for an experienced Commercial Manager who’ll play a key role in the successful delivery of this significant piece of rail infrastructure. Working within this high performing project delivery team the role of Commercial Manager will see you responsible for the planning and management of the end to end commercial management in both the upstream and downstream space.  


Key functions;


  • Ensure administration of the head contract in accordance with that contract and business requirements
  • Ensure establishment and administration of all downstream contracts are in accordance with business processes, in compliance with legislation and to minimise and manage any gap risk
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting for the project, in accordance with business processes, systems and timeframes
  • Oversight of risk and opportunity management and reporting for the project
Responsibilities of the role include;


  • Ensure all project staff understand and comply with commercial requirements in contracts with customers and major/high risk subcontracts as per policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Institute dispute avoidance techniques with client and subcontractors / suppliers
  • Manage commercial issues, minor and major contract disputes when delegated by senior management
  • Ensure efficient function of the commercial team in all its duties, including:
    • Head contract administration
    • Downstream agreement formation and administration
    • Forecasting
    • Financial Reporting
    • Accounts payable
    • Procurement / purchasing
  • Identify and review / approve major / high risk subcontracts / suppliers
  • Lead identification and quantification of Head Contract scope changes and all subsequent negotiations with the Client
  • Ensure that stakeholders are actively engaged and that beneficial relationships between the project and the client, subcontractors, community and other external parties are developed and maintained
  • Ensure strong contract, commercial and financial risk management, accurate forecasting of both costs and revenue, take corrective action in line with authority and reporting frameworks
To be successful in this key role, you must have;


  • Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Law, Commerce, Accounting or equivalent 
  • 15 years’ experience in commercial and contract administration gained on construction, engineering or associated projects
  • Minimum 8 - 10 years’ experience in commercial management role
  • Experience in head contract administration of large value contracts with complex contractual arrangements including progress claims, change management, administrative reporting and management of bonding and insurances
  • Experience in all stages of subcontract management, including scope preparation, procurement, cost forecasting, subcontractor management, claims/variations management, completion and close out
  • Skill in quantitative and qualitative risk assessment and development of risk controls and actions involved in delivery and implementation of projects
  • Demonstrated financial management capability including production and interrogation of cost and revenue forecasts
  • Exceptional and proven interpersonal skills insofar as concerns dealings with clients, peers, subordinates and the wider project team
