Job Description

John Holland manages the prestigious Country Regional Network (CRN) which makes us the first accredited private rail transport operator of a government owned heavy rail network in NSW, and one of only three accredited managers of public rail infrastructure in the State. The scope involves the operation, management and upgrade of country railway lines across NSW including 2,700km of operational freight and passenger lines, and 3,100km of non-operational lines.



We are currently seeking a Bridge & Structure Supervisor to join our CRN team in Mayfield. Reporting to the Civil & Structures Superintendent, this role will be responsible for Leading Hands, Maintainers/Labourers, Protection Officers & Subcontractors. The Bridge & Structures Supervisor supervises a works team to effectively deliver programmed & other works to ensure operational integrity & efficiency within CRN.


Technical responsibilities of the role include;

Initiate action & processes to prevent the occurrence of unsafe incidents

Identify & record any safety issues

Open & close out work orders to reflect the tasks

Ensure mandatory inspection & minor works are completed in compliance with safety requirements & within annual budget & framework

Supervise employee & external contractor performance to ensure optimal productivity

Ensure compliance with all mandatory systems & processes

Certify the integrity of completed projects

Determine appropriate resource allocation including personnel, plant and material allocation and prioritization

Maintenance of materials, tools, vehicles & equipment

Recommend improvements in the maintenance & work processes

Optimise infrastructure performance & availability

Respond to emergency situations as required

Participate in projects & undertake other duties as requested by the Superintendent

Ensure safety checks are completed & appropriate documentation is maintained

Control the security & condition of all storerooms & control the issue of items for use on approved work-orders to minimise the opportunity for improper use of material held in stores

Monitor the use of material issued against work-orders to eliminate loss & minimise accidental damage

Conduct mandatory systematic inspection, examination, condition monitoring & functional checks on the rail infrastructure

Assess & report on rail infrastructure availability & safe operational condition


To be successful in this key role, you must have;

Minimum of 5 years previous rail asset management experience in a similar role

Demonstrated competency in managing groups including scoping & estimating works

Extensive knowledge of a single rail infrastructure discipline stream (track or structures)

Demonstrated knowledge of project management tools & management systems e.g. MS Project

Proven ability to manage staff safely

Strong relationship building, influencing & negotiation skills

Strong promoter of safety culture & identifying & implementing improvements

Competent time management skills

Excellent open & honest communication skills

Effective team-player & team engagement capabilities

Computer proficient in Microsoft Office & Project

Well-developed problem solving skills

Well-developed interpersonal, oral & written skills

Ability to read & review plans for comment & constructability

Ability to manage multiple projects together

C class Drivers Licence
