About the project
John Holland is delivering the North-East Link, Hoddle St to Bourke Road package of works. The Eastern Hoddle Bourke Alliance (EHBA) is made up of John Holland, Seymour Whyte and design partners Mott MacDonald and Jacobs Group, in partnership with MRPV.
The scope of works includes upgrading six kilometres of the Freeway with new traffic lanes, bridge upgrades and urban noise walls, a dedicated busway (fully segregated from mainline traffic), and a new bridge over the Yarra River.
The NEL Project involves the design and construction of the upgrade of the Eastern Freeway from Hoddle Street in the west to Burke Road in the east, including:
6km of brownfield freeway widening to accommodate additional traffic lanes in each direction
3km dedicated busway separated from mainline traffic.
Significant structures including 600m of bridges, including a 180m architectural steel shared use path bridge of the Yarra River Freeway-wide scope including ITS, retaining walls, stormwater drainage, noise walls, lighting and signage.
Site location to be around Chandler Highway / Eastern Freeway interchange.
About the role:
The North East Link team is currently looking for an experienced Design Manager to join the Bridges and Structures team. Reporting into the Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for leading and managing the design delivery process, function, and team through the construction phase to maximise and deliver successful project outcomes. Scope includes 3 steel bridges, 1 x Super T bridge, 2 existing bridges with throw screens/modifications, retaining walls, noise walls, piled barriers, ITS and Sign Gantries.
Responsibilities of the role include:
- Plan and control the delivery of project design to ensure the achievement of quality, completion, and project objectives.
- Monitor the performance of external design partners within the discipline, including their deliverables, costs, and timeframes.
- Prepare budgets and schedules of design delivery for management approval, then manage and report the cost of design delivery in the project life cycle.
- Coordinate and manage different packages of work with consultants, and our construction teams.
- Conduct or arrange internal reviews of work to ensure quality before submission to the client.
- Ensure compliance with client design standards including MRPV Standard Specifications, Australian Standards, AustRoads and other applicable standards.
- Supervise the work of subordinate design and drafting staff to ensure project requirements are met.
- Understand design compliance and reporting procedures and processes and lead in the communication of requirements.
- Foster interaction between design and construction teams to maximise innovation and project success.
- Perform all duties in accordance with John Holland policies, processes, systems, and procedures.
To be successful in this key role, you must have:
- Tertiary Qualification in Architecture, Building, Construction, Engineering, or Quantity Surveying.
- Essential background in Structural & Bridge works
- 5+ years of Design experience and managing the shop drawing process
- 5–8 years of Construction experience.
- Experience in Alliance Project environment
- Multi-discipline project experience in Building, Construction, and Design.
- Proven commercial and legislative compliance skills and design frameworks and systems.
