About the Role / Are you up for the challenge?

 

As Engineering Manager, you will be involved in the leadership and direction of the Engineering function, 
inclusive of Design, Digital Engineering, Temporary Works, Construction Phase Services and Systems 
Engineering and Assurance, through tender and project delivery.
To ensure the project deliverables comply with the project requirements, support the construction program, 
meet stakeholder requirements, and maintain a strong focus on driving positive outcomes across safety, 
quality, environment, stakeholders, community, and time.
To facilitate the internal interfaces between Design and Construction Teams in addition to managing 
external interfaces with key stakeholders, ensuring construction issues are identified and incorporated into 
the project documentation and that engineering requirements are observed in construction methodology 
planning.

 

Project Description

 

Inland Rail is transforming how goods are moved around Australia, connecting Melbourne and Brisbane via 
regional Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. This 1,700km fast freight backbone will complete our 
national freight network – better connecting producers to markets and creating new opportunities for regional 
businesses, industries and communities. 
The Beveridge to Albury (B2A) project is the Victorian portion of the program undertaken along approximately 
305 kms of existing northeast rail corridor between Beveridge and Albury. B2A is staged in two tranches. 
Tranche 1 includes enhancement works across four sites and corridor wide works. 
Tranche 2 works will be delivered by John Holland and includes adjustment of track alignments, the provision 
of new road overbridges and station modifications to enable the safe operation of double-stack freight trains 
across eight B2A project sites between Wandong and Benalla.  
 

Responsibilities of the role include / What you will do;

 

  • Overall responsibility for the role on this high-profile major project includes:
  • Promote Engineering and Design Management culture within projects
  • Demonstrate people management by assisting with resourcing to ensure projects have the capability to 
  • achieve targets
  • Manage and coach engineering staff and foster a high-performance working environment
  • Exhibit leadership in health, safety, environmental, sustainability and risk management
  • Demonstrate commercial and contractual awareness in dealing with clients and external technical partners
  • Assist with the selection and development of Engineering Management staff within the project by providing 
  • leadership and mentoring to ensure appropriate competencies
  • Review selection and engagement of technical partners with bid team and provide appropriate commercial 
  • support
  • Maintain relationships with technical partners
  • Understand design compliance and reporting procedures and processes and leadership in the communication 
  • of requirements
  • Create and maintain strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to facilitate a collaborative 
  • and positive design review process for obtainment of required approvals
  • Facilitate timely decision making, appropriate assessment of change requests and opportunities for early 
  • commencement of works 
  • Promote consideration of temporary works requirements in permanent works design development.
  • Provide engineering services to site management during the currency of contracts
  • Assist in the preparation of estimates, submission of tenders and recommendations regarding construction 
  • techniques, engineering procedures, and the utilisation of new technology
  • Plan and control the delivery of project design to ensure the achievement of quality, completion, and project 
  • objectives
  • Monitor the management of design risks and issues.
  • Drive application of value engineering and sustainability initiatives
  • Manage the design approval process in accordance with project requirements and program
  • Manage client and stakeholder expectations and communicate effectively with the project team 
  • Provide engineering services to site management during the currency of contracts
  • Foster the interaction between design and construction teams to maximise innovation and project success.
  • Ensure that JH Safety in Design requirements are achieved
  • Examine project change requests as requested, and advise on related engineering matters
  • Coordinate the activities of outside engineering consultants (Temporary Works/ Proof Engineer)
  • Review design and engineering management activities on bids and projects in consultation with other 
  • managers and professionals to ensure that standards of quality, cost, safety, and time performance are 
  • achieved
     

To be successful in this key role, you must have / What we are looking for;

 

  • Tertiary qualification in Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartership with Engineer’s Australia equivalent 
  • Demonstrated experience in engineering and technical management roles
  • Multidiscipline experience specialising in design, engineering, and construction
  • Management of technical teams in the delivery of design and engineering solutions for bids and projects, 
  • including planning and budget management
  • Financial management skills in planning and managing budgets included demonstrated behaviour in reducing 
  • costs
  • Experienced in stakeholder management with focus on relationship building, influencing, communication and 
  • negotiation skills, particularly with design partners
  • Quantitative and qualitative design risk identification, assessment, controls, and management
  • Demonstrated ability to manage work and performance of teams
