The Role:
John Holland is seeking a Heavy Plant Mechanic Apprentice to work with our Rail Plant Services division in Spotswood, Victoria. This is an amazing opportunity to kick-start your career with Australia’s leading rail contractor and you will learn from a team of expert tradespersons who are committed to delivering exceptional projects.
At John Holland we see our apprentices as our future rail leaders, and you’ll complete the first stage of a structured learning and development program that’s designed to arm you with the skills needed for a big future in our industry.
As an Heavy Plant Mechanic apprentice you’ll gain practical on the job experience while receiving extensive training and a Certificate III. Apprenticeships are typically for four years with the ability to complete earlier.

Details Of The Apprenticeship:
- Safe & Correct Use of Hand & Powered Tools & Measuring Equipment.
- Hydraulic & Pneumatic Systems.
- Fault Finding & Diagnostic Skills on A Variety of Plant & Equipment.
- Document Writing-(Filling In Services Sheets & Fault & Repair Reports , Other Documentation as Required).
- PLC & ALC Systems on The State Of The Art Tamping Machines.
- Automotive Electrical Systems Up To 24vdc.
- Braking Systems.
- Be Able to Read Hydraulic & Electrical Schematics.
- Able to Understand Technical Drawings.
- Mechanical Fitting Skills.
- Welding (ARC , Mig , Oxy & Acetylene Cutting).
- Work on Variety Plant & Equipment(2 Stroke Chain Saw-100T State Of The Art Track Machine)
Working Conditions:
- Based out of John Holland’s Spotswood workshop.
- Workshop based work with some site work in the later stages of the apprenticeship.
- Typical hours are 7:30AM to 4:00PM Mon-Fri
- RDO Every Fortnight.
- John Holland will cover the cost of successfully completed TAFE units.
- Canddiate must be able to provide own transport.
- Mates Mentoring Program.
- PPE & Work Clothing-Supplied By John Holland.
About You:
- A genuine passion for Mechanical work.
- An ability to undertake manual/physical work.
- Completed a pre-Apprenticeship course in a Mechanical discipline.
- Ability to work at heights.
- Ability to follow instruction and work effectively in a team.
- An understanding and strong focus for safety.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Strong work ethic.
- An ability to meet deadlines and work calmly under pressure.
- Motivated and reliable.
- Be able to provide own transport to travel to work sites.
