John Holland manages the prestigious Country Regional Network (CRN) which makes us the first accredited private rail transport operator of a government owned heavy rail network in NSW, and one of only three accredited managers of public rail infrastructure in the State. The scope involves the operation, management and upgrade of country railway lines across NSW including 2,700km of operational freight and passenger lines, and 3,100km of non-operational lines.


We are currently seeking an experienced WHS Manager who will provide leadership, advice and governance of WHS Management systems within the workplace.   

Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Working closely with senior leaders to implement and evaluate the WHS strategy to build a positive culture of accountability and for continuous improvement
  • Provide specialist support to all internal stakeholders including contractors, clients and visitors
  • Develop, guide and coach direct reports to ensure a high level of WHS support is provided to the business
  • Initiate and administer safety improvement, education and compliance programs
  • Manage, evaluate and improve systems and processes for reporting incidents, injuries and implement prevention programs
  • Work in partnership with the business to ensure the annual works program (AWP) and Projects maintains robust risk management processes, capability, focus and discipline related to safety
  • Manage the Workers Compensation and Injury Management function 
  • Collaborate closely with other WHS community in John Holland to seek expert guidance and roll out Group wide WHS initiatives


To be successful in this key role, you must have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in WHS
  • Rail (highly regarded) or construction/mining safety management experience 
  • High attention to detail 
  • Experience in leading a team and working with senior leadership 
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective business relationships at all levels with a proactive and solutions focused outlook and highly collaborative working style
  • Proven experience providing effective WHS consultancy services within a large or regional multi-site organisation
  • The flexibility to travel to regional sites as required
