About the Role

John Holland has been awarded The Koodaideri Project Phase 1 which is a greenfield rail project for Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO). The Project requires a 170 km rail spur to connect the Koodaideri mine to the existing RTIO rail network, just south of Lyre Siding at Numbat. 

An opportunity has arisen for a Rail Safe Working Coordinator to join the project and manage the Project Safe Working team, including Principal Protection Officers (PPO’s) and Protection Officers (PO’s), and facilitate the Rail Safe Working requirements within the construction zone interfacing with the Client Safe Working personnel and JHG Project Operations.  This role will operate in a FIFO capacity and Point of Hire for this position is Perth.

Responsibilities of the role include (but are by no means limited to);
  • Lead an effective and professional safe working team, comprising of both Principal Protection Officers (PPO’s) and Protection Officers (PO’s).
  • Manage day to day operations, ensuring compliance with all safeworking rules and protocols.
  • Perform a role as a Principal Protection Officer (PPO)
  • Document all rolling stock movements and workgroups booking onto and off the construction zone
  • Responsible for safe working, infrastructure constraints and operations which collectively impact on the way work trains/track machines/work groups are coordinated through and within the project work sites
  • Accountable for developing productive partnerships, open communication, and sharing of information.
  • Responsible for incident management, Rail Safety Requirements, operational strategies, and advice on safe working within the project
  • Provide specialist and technical support and information to all railway workers which is critical for making decisions about operational safe working strategies.
  • Take reasonable care for personal safety and for the safety of people who may be affected by the rail safety worker’s acts or omission
  • Perform all duties in accordance with RTIO and John Holland policies, processes, systems and procedures.
  • Drive a strong organisational culture amongst the project in your areas of influence, in line with the project objective of achieving “Safe Production”
  • Interface with client/project wide stakeholders, developing and maintaining collaborative relationships supporting operational governance
To be successful in this key role, you must have;
  • Cert IV in Rail Net Work Control or related industry experience
  • Qualified in safe working Level M8, rules and procedures (RTIO)
  • C Class Driving Licence
  • Minimum of five years previous rail experience, in a similar role
  • Ability to manage operational incidents on the network
  • Demonstrated high level of knowledge and understanding of the rail network restrictions, operating conditions and safe working rules
  • Experience in a team and customer orientated environment with demonstrated capacity to share knowledge and make timely decisions
  • Ability to influence, negotiate desired outcomes, and lead others
  • Advanced communication skills, with proven ability to convey information accurately and follow strict communication protocols
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to use safe working control systems and computing technology
  • Knowledge of working train systems, sidings, and station working
  • Ability to plan, prioritise and coordinate safe working activities
  • Knowledge of the Rail Safety Act and System Rail Safety Plans
