About our TEK Technical Design team

The Technical Design stream of TEK comprises subject matter experts in the disciplines of temporary works design, structural engineering, traffic engineering, hydrology and geotechnical engineering.  We work closely with the various business units providing technical support and solutions to win and deliver safe and commercially successful projects by mitigating risk and developing innovative solutions.

About the Role

We are currently looking for an experienced Geotechnical Engineer (Technical Design) to join our TEK (Technology, Engineering and Knowledge) division based in Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne.

Working within our Technical Design team and reporting into the Geotechnical Engineering Group Manager, you will be accountable for assisting John Holland tender and project teams by providing geotechnical advice that helps to achieve the team goal with a specific focus on identification of risks and opportunities. You will identify and mitigate risks on John Holland tenders and projects to support bid conversion and enable successful project delivery.

You will also actively pursue value add geotechnical opportunities using best practice approach for tenders and projects.

Your key tasks will include (but are not limited to):

  • Collaborate and support John Holland (JH) tenders and projects team in identifying key risks and opportunities, risk mitigation strategy, and opportunities realisation.
  • Collaborate closely with all teams within TEK to enable a multi-disciplined approach that includes Technical Design (TD) Stream, Design Management (DM) Stream, Rail Engineering Integration (REI) stream and Digital Engineering & Technology (DE&T) stream.
  • Mentor and teach team members from TEK or broader the JH team regarding geotechnical engineering.
  • Manage and support JH tender or project teams in collaborating with external consultants.
  • Complete independent analysis and designs for JH tenders or project teams to challenge or verify advice from external consultants. 
  • Construction phase support and verification, including site monitoring works.
  • Contribute and collaborate with other teams in JH for real innovations in the geotechnical space.

To be successful, you’ll have the following:

  • A minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering from an institute recognised by Engineers Australia.
  • Membership with Engineers Australia and be working towards obtaining Engineers Australia Chartered Status.
  • 5+ years local experience producing high quality technical outputs related to geotechnical design.  
  • Experience should also include hands on on-site geotechnical works from investigation stage to design delivery.
  • Proficiency with basic suites of geotechnical software that covers limit equilibrium and FEM. Further strong technical basis in analytical solutions is expected.
  • Flexible and team-centric attitude with high motivation to learn and adapt to a variety of challenges that extend beyond the technical.
  • Leadership experience in mentoring less experienced geotechnical engineers  
  • Competent with the use and application of various relevant Australian Standards and industry requirements.
  • Progressive understanding of varied construction methodologies and techniques on Civil disciplines and Building structures.
