We are currently looking for an experienced Principal Temporary Works Engineer join our Temporary Works team, within the Construction Engineering division. The role can be based out of our Pyrmont office in Sydney, or our Flinders Gate office in Melbourne.
This strategic role will lead the identification and development of the safest, most efficient, and innovative Temporary Works solutions across major infrastructure, rail, and building projects.
You will influence bids and delivery outcomes from pre-contracts through to delivery, drive both internal and external design development, and manage and coordinate external temporary works consultants. You will develop concepts, review a broad range of packages, certify temporary works designs and provide proof engineering verifications, as well as engaging with key stakeholders including clients, consultants, and cross-functional project teams to ensure successful project outcomes.
About the Role:
- Provide holistic Temporary Works support across the Engineering Lifecycle, with focus on complex projects within pre-contracts, project launch/ setup and enabling delivery teams throughout construction
- Engage with projects across Rail, Infrastructure and Buildings groups to influence the design and delivery of Temporary Works across projects.
- Develop high level staging and sequence of works, ensuring consistency in design and engineering management practice and knowledge sharing
- Propose construction methodology solutions to effectively deliver high risk activities
- Identify technical risks or opportunities which may impact the successful delivery of projects in delivery
- Ensure constructability in the permanent works Design and the Construction programme
- Early-stage engagement to develop efficient and technically validated Temporary Works concept solutions, including technical input into design briefs so these can be issued to external Temporary Works consultants for detailed design, documentation and certification
- Undertake reviews of external Temporary Works consultant or sub-contractor certified Temporary Works designs for high-risk Temporary Works packages
- Challenge or optimisation of Temporary Works designs or construction methodologies
- Temporary tender / project secondments to manage high-risk Temporary Works packages, or provide technical guidance to the delivery team
- Provide advice and cost-effective technical solutions which meet John Holland quality, safety and risk requirements
- Ability to use engineering expertise and problem-solving skills to resolve new technical challenges not previously encountered
- Influence and provide technical support to onsite engineering functions ensuring client specifications are met in relation to design, supply, procurement and installation of Temporary Works.
- Develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the continued engagement with the Construction Engineering team
- Manage, plan, coordinate and conduct professional engineering works without supervision
- Assist John Holland project compliance with the procedures and processes developed to support the safe delivery of Temporary Works, assist HSEQ team with project audits and incident investigations
- Understand and highlight where project specifications and contractual requirements relating to Temporary Works present project delivery risk, and ensure these are adequately captured during tender
- Facilitate specific Temporary Works training courses focusing on upskilling and educating the workforce on Temporary Works, production of technical notices and ensuring the business continues to learn (and benefit) from past projects
About You:
This position will require you to hold a degree qualification in Civil or Structural Engineering and be a Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartership with Engineer’s Australia. You bring extensive experience specialising in design and engineering of various Temporary Works and construction methods including major or complex projects.
To succeed in this role, you will have advanced design and analysis capabilities, using software including SpaceGass, Strand7, etc, as well as design It is essential that you have extensively used and applied various Australian Standards and industry requirements and that you are experienced in the management and coordination of Engineers and Drafting teams to deliver Temporary Works design solutions.
