Job Description

John Holland manages the prestigious Country Regional Network (CRN) which makes us the first accredited private rail transport operator of a government owned heavy rail network in NSW, and one of only three accredited managers of public rail infrastructure in the State. The scope involves the operation, management and upgrade of country railway lines across NSW including 2,700km of operational freight and passenger lines, and 3,100km of non-operational lines.


We are currently looking for a Rail Track Maintainer to join our team based in Nyngan. The purpose of this role is to carry out general labouring and track maintenance duties to CRN standards.


As a Rail Track Maintainer, you will report directly to the Supervisor and your duties will include but are not limited to:


  • Work under supervision, following instructions at all times, and within a team to assist in delivering programmed works including renewing wooden sleepers, spotting and replacing rail
  • Driving light/medium vehicles to/from site (licence required)
  • Clearing of scrub around corridor or around works
  • Operating mobile plant (licence required)
  • Work within your skills and competency levels
  • Demonstrate good written and oral communication skills
  • Participate in site safety inspections, audits and tool box meetings
  • Raise any potential safety issues to leading hand or supervisor
  • Ensure compliance with IMP, OH&S, Environmental Plans and Railway Safety Legislation requirements where necessary
  • Follow safety instructions and procedures from leading hand/supervisor
  • Secure and maintain, in a fit for purpose state all tools, material items and spare parts issued for the performance of work on behalf of the CRN
  • Participate in projects and undertake other duties as directed.
  • Be able to work a reasonable amount of overtime as required by the business
  • Actively involved in some overnight travel as part of the position
  • Complete various training packages as part of role development 


The successful candidate will possess:

  • Minimum 1 year previous rail experience
  • Hold a current RISI/RICI/RIW ticket
  • DG - Dogging High Risk Work Licence
  • CV – Vehicle Loading Crane (Hiab) High Risk work Licence
  • MR Truck licence (desirable)
  • Loader, Excavator Plant Operator licence/s (desirable)
  • Trades qualified (desirable)
