We are currently looking for an experienced Senior Design Manager to join our TEK (Technology, Engineering and Knowledge) division based at one of our offices in either Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne

Working within our TEK Design Management team, you will be responsible for the effective management of internal resources and external consultants, coordinating multiple disciplines and construction requirements all to ensure tender and project designs meet with JHG expectations and are delivered to time, client requirements and budget.

This position will see you working with the other TEK Business Units and John Holland Group to achieve project objectives, positioning John Holland as a market leader in the design and delivery of critical infrastructure projects, as well as working on design management improvement initiatives.

About the Role:

  • Promote a culture of business excellence within TEK through accountability, innovation and transparency
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with design partners
  • Review design and engineering management activities on tenders and projects in consultation with other managers and professionals
  • Ensure tender and project design management resource needs are met with appropriate staff
  • Review design management systems for best practice and recommend updates – advocate design management improvements
  • Prepare and maintain design management budgets and work schedules, and liaise with Project Managers in placement of resources on tenders and projects
  • Promote TEK nationally and internationally to the wider JH business through meetings and presentations
  • Creation and development of TEK communities for Design Management
  • Coordinate, select and mentor design and engineering management resources
  • Review selection and engagement of design consultants with tender and project resources and provide appropriate commercial support
  • Lead and drive design management culture based on best practice, meeting internal and external needs with pro-active focus on risk management, SQE and sustainability
  • Professional development and retention of Design Management knowledge within the business, including support of Knowledge Management in TEK and the business
  • Promote the use of Digital Engineering tools and methods for managing the design process, feeding into the other project phases
  • Act in the role of Senior Design Manager when necessary in significant tenders and projects.

About You:

This position will require you to hold a degree qualification in Engineering and be a Chartered Engineer with Engineers Australia or equivalent.  You will have extensive experience in engineering and technical management roles, ideally with both design and construction experience.  You will have expertise in infrastructure delivery, design, engineering and construction, as well as demonstrated management of a technical team in the delivery of design and engineering solutions for tenders and projects.

To succeed in this role, you will have exceptional communication skills, being able to clearly communicate design to technical and non-technical audiences.  The position also requires strong financial, commercial and program management skills in planning and managing budgets including proven capability in reducing costs.  The ability to nurture client relationships and utilise your excellent stakeholder management skills is essential.
