About the Position


We are currently looking for an experienced 'Front-end' Senior Legal Counsel to join our legal function based in our Pyrmont office, in Sydney NSW. Reporting into the General Counsel Northern, you’ll be accountable for ensuring the operation of the ‘business as usual’ legal functions primarily in NSW, QLD, NT, ACT and NZ are conducted within the limits prescribed by law and that John Holland’s rights are fully protected through the provision of legal advice and guidance. The focus of the position will be the provision of contract and construction legal advice and support across our Rail, Infrastructure and Building Business Groups. 


Your key tasks will include (but not limited to):

 

  • Provide legal advice to ensure John Holland’s interests are protected, and that commercial arrangements and risk management are acceptable, particularly with reference to John Holland’s procedures and Authority Levels, and applicable legislation
  • Review, negotiate, draft and settle contracts and other commercial arrangements to safeguard John Holland’s interests
  • Provide legal advice and support in the resolution of disputes and differences
  • Work closely with John Holland’s commercial teams to achieve business outcomes
  • Liaise with government officials, departments or tribunals on matters affecting John Holland’s activities
  • Ensure that stakeholders are actively engaged and that beneficial relationships between John Holland, clients, subcontractors, community and other external parties are developed and maintained

 

To be successful, you’ll have the following:

 

  • Graduate qualifications in Law 
  • Current Australian Practicing Certificate
  • Minimum 8 years post-qualification experience 
  • Experience as a practicing lawyer in construction, engineering, resources, or transport industries with majority of experience in providing contract and construction legal advice 
  • Experience in corporate and commercial litigation, arbitration, mediation, adjudications etc
  • Experience in tenders and associated activities
