Job Description

John Holland manages the prestigious Country Regional Network (CRN) which makes us the first accredited private rail transport operator of a government owned heavy rail network in NSW, and one of only three accredited managers of public rail infrastructure in the State. The scope involves the operation, management and upgrade of country railway lines across NSW including 2,700km of operational freight and passenger lines, and 3,100km of non-operational lines.


We are currently seeking a Construction Supervisor to join the team at our CRN workshop in Dubbo NSW. Reporting to the Resurfacing & Construction Superintendent, this role will be responsible for contributing to the development of construction methodologies and management plans. The successful candidate will be required to attend project planner meetings as well as carry out project dilapidation reports to identify risk and necessary project controls. The role will also involve coordinating practical completion site visits and associated documentation, as well as requiring the ability to step into the Superintendent role if/when required. THIS IS NOT A FIFO ROLE.


Responsibilities of the role also include:

Coordinating the work and performance of multiple teams and subcontractors to achieve outcomes
Provide and take leadership responsibility in health, safety and environment management
Contribute to development of work methods and rolling short term construction programs and plan daily/weekly production work
Build strong internal and external stakeholder management through positive, proactive and professional communication to keep key personnel informed
Complete progress reporting, and activities, reports for shift handovers and consistent regular reporting to the Superintendent or Project Manager
Ensure compliance of commercial and financial costs including budgets and the implications of directions within your authority limits
Read and understand plans, review design documentation, read drawings, and provide constructive review and implementing of final designs, Ensure contractual mechanisms of subcontractors
Identify and mitigate risks prior to works commencing, communicate with and engage relevant stakeholders to control risk and contribute to build a risk management culture
Select, train and develop Leading Hands and ensure the observance of safety other work standards and fair and reasonable application of industrial agreements
Maintain effective consultation with various workers’ representatives and committees on industrial and safety subjects handling issues as they arise and referring major issues to the Project Manager


To be successful in this key role, you must have:

Protection Officer Qualifications and 2-5 years previous rail experience in a similar role.
Extensive knowledge of a single rail infrastructure discipline stream (track, structures or signalling) and associated systems, coupled with a firm understanding of the other disciplines
Knowledge of Rail Safety Management principles
Track reconditioning experience
Track certification qualifications
Planning experience (advantageous)
