Within the National Plant Group, our team manages plant, rollingstock & equipment strategy, asset systems integration, asset reliability assurance, testing, commissioning, operations & maintenance. Currently, there is an Entry-Level Apprentice Plant Mechanic opportunity in our NSW Team based out of the Kooragang Island Depot.


At John Holland we see our apprentices as our future rail leaders, and to start you off in your career you will complete the first stage of a structured learning and development program. The program is designed to supply you with the skills needed for a big future in our rail industry. As an apprentice, you will gain practical on the job training whilst receiving a formal trade qualification. The apprenticeship is typically four years with the ability to complete it earlier with full coverage of TAFE fees and any internal or other accredited programs you may undertake.


Over the 4-year term of the apprenticeship you’ll gain skills and experience with:
-Light vehicle, mechanical maintenance, service and repair, and operation
-Light through to heavy truck, mechanical maintenance, service and repair, and operation
-Light through to heavy Crane, mechanical maintenance, service and repair, and operation
-Rail orientated plant & equipment, mechanical maintenance, service and repair, and operation
-Gaining operational licences & tickets for the above equipment and associated tasks


Working conditions:
-Based out of John Holland’s Kooragang Island Plant Facility
-Workshop and site-based work throughout apprenticeship and career
-Typical hours are 6AM – 2.30PM Mon- Thu 6AM-12PM Fri. The requirement to work different shifts might occur depending on the project’s requirements. These shifts may include overtime, weekend work and night shift work. The successful candidate must be flexible with the hours of work.
-Must be able to provide own transport to travel to work sites
-Availability to work in regional areas


To be successful in this role you must have:
-Commitment to full term of the apprenticeship and study requirements
-Understanding of safety and safe work practices
-An ability to undertake manual/physical work
-An ability to work at heights
-Year 10 Education
-Able to work overtime as required


Selection Process
-Psychometric, Literacy and Numeracy assessments
-Reference checks
-Pre-employment CAT1 medical including drug & alcohol testing.
