About the M1 South - Blackhill to Tomago project:

A joint venture between John Holland and Gamuda Australia has been selected by Transport for NSW to deliver the M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace Southern Package - a key missing link in one of the country's busiest transport corridors.

The $1.029 billion southern package will deliver a 10-kilometre dual carriageway motorway extension between Black Hill and Tomago. There will be 8 bridges that include a 2.6km viaduct and new congestion-busting interchanges at Black Hill, Tarro and Tomago.

About the role:

We’re currently looking for an experienced Geotech Engineer to join our M1 Project based in Newcastle.

The works will be delivered by both sub-contractor and self-perform mechanisms, requiring strong communication and coordination. This project is the first of its kind in the Newcastle region and we are looking for someone who is passionate about growing their career with a tier one contractor with a local community culture.

Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Review and understand existing IFC design, ensure construction is carried out in accordance with the IFC designs and report where deviations have occurred
  • Cut floor and embankment foundation inspections and propose suitable treatment types
  • Instrumentation and monitoring of geotechnical structures including embankments on compressible soils and working platforms
  • Validation of ground conditions in accordance with design requirements
  • Compile and update a tracker for all installed monitoring instruments and manage a database of instrumentation and monitoring results
  • Contribute to managing change in geotechnical design requirements
  • Respond to queries where they arise from the construction team and advise and support the closing out of RFI’s
  • Track the status of geotechnical RFI’s to the client and design team
  • Propose further geotech testing as required, interpret data and make proposals to aide construction
  • Supervision of bridge foundations involving driven and bored piles
  • Inspections of temporary working platforms and batter slopes
  • Utilise document management systems for communication
  • Attendance and contribution to meetings with design and construction teams

To be successful in this key role, you must have:

  • A university degree in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering or another relevant degree
  • 3 years working in a geotechnical engineering/representative role
  • A comprehensive understanding of the geotechnical engineering role
  • Valid Driving Licence
  • Microsoft Office Suite and Sharepoint
  • Specific geotechnical experience during construction
  • Preferred: Well-versed in Transport for New South Wales specifications
