About the Project
John Holland has a strong and growing pipeline of major rail infrastructure works across Western Australia, spanning complex brownfield and greenfield environments. Our projects support the safe, reliable and efficient movement of people and freight, and involve close collaboration with clients, regulators, delivery partners and multidisciplinary teams.
Based in our Perth CBD office, this role will support the delivery of multiple signalling design packages across significant rail programs, offering exposure to technically complex systems and long-term career opportunities within a Tier 1 contractor environment.
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Signalling Design Engineer to play a key technical leadership role within our WA Rail team.
In this role, you will lead the design and development of complex rail signalling systems, taking ownership of the full design lifecycle from concept through to detailed design and construction support. You will act as a trusted technical authority, ensuring designs are safe, compliant and constructible, while mentoring engineers and collaborating closely with project and client stakeholders.
This is a critical role that directly contributes to the safe delivery of major rail infrastructure and the continued growth of our signalling capability in Western Australia.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end delivery of rail signalling designs across multiple project phases, from concept through to detailed design.
- Act as a technical authority for signalling systems, providing guidance, approvals and expert advice to project teams.
- Prepare, review and approve signalling drawings, specifications, calculations and technical reports.
- Ensure all designs meet Australian Standards, rail industry standards, client requirements and safety-critical obligations.
- Coordinate with civil, electrical, systems, testing and commissioning teams to ensure integrated and constructible outcomes.Identify and manage technical risks, implementing practical mitigation strategies.Support testing and commissioning activities through design clarification, troubleshooting and technical documentation.
- Engage proactively with clients, contractors and regulatory bodies to resolve technical issues and maintain delivery momentum.
- Mentor and develop junior engineers, contributing to capability uplift and succession within the team.
- Drive continuous improvement by identifying opportunities for innovation in signalling design practices and technologies.
What We Are Looking For
- Extensive experience in railway signalling design, ideally with 10+ years delivering complex rail infrastructure projects.
- Strong working knowledge of Australian Standards, rail safety requirements and regulatory frameworks.
- Tertiary qualifications in signalling, electrical, telecommunications or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
- IRSE certification (Designer and/or Design Verifier) or equivalent signalling competency.Proficiency in signalling design tools such as AutoCAD or MicroStation, and strong capability across Microsoft Office.
- Proven ability to lead technically, manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality outcomes in deadline-driven environments.
- Strong communication skills with the confidence to engage across clients, regulators and multidisciplinary delivery teams.
- A collaborative mindset with a genuine interest in mentoring and developing others.
